Downtown Wolfgang Puck Gourmet Express

Wolfgang Puck Express Wolfgang Puck Express Wolfgang Puck Express Wolfgang Puck Express T: We only had an hour for a quick dinner so we hit up this place just around the corner from the central branch of the LA City Library.

Two words: Pleasant surprise.

T had the Puckburger; D had their famous Roast Chicken. Fried onion strips and made-there potato chips covered in gorgonzola to start. Ice-cold Stella for T and a rotten Chablis for D.

Portions were gigantic. Prices weren’t expensive. About $120 for 5 people to eat including a bottle of prosecco, a couple of beers and a glass of wine.

The Puckburger was full of that char-grilled taste that all burgers aspire to have but usually don’t have enough of. The fixings were perfect and just added to the taste. The tomato/lettuce added a nice cool to the burger and a crispiness that it needed to stay fresh in the mouth. The chips? Perfectly cooked – nice, crispy, and salty. A perfect accompaniment for the burger – much lighter than fries – you fool yourself into eating them because they’re so light and tasty, thinking “just one more…” as you finish off the plate.

D’s Chicken was great – perfectly cooked – it had that nice plumpness that brined chicken has with a mouthful of rosemary in every bite. Skin nice, thick, and crispy and the potatoes were great – a nice well of gravy to mop it all up. Sizewise – definitely a dish for two, not that ever seems to stop us.

Overall verdict – excellent food at a reasonable price. The service was nice, efficient, and the place was clean and well lit. D had very low expectations based on some reviews of these places – but this one executed on everything perfectly and we both left full and happy.

However, don’t expect every WPE to have the same quality – see our review of Sunday’s meal at the Santa Monica 3rd street location – we didn’t have the same luck that we had at the downtown location…
