The LA Trip

October 26th, 2007 · No Comments

Santa Monica Sunset

T: The City of Angles; the City of Industry; the City of Sin, of Hollywood, of movies and stars and glamour. One of the world’s largest cities – a long-running episode of urban sprawl. The city of the Black Dahlia and OJ Simpson and Raymond Chandler novels. So much has been written, so much filmed, so much excitement about these many square miles on the coast.

It’s easy to read, see the movies, listen to your friend’s reports on their trips there. And none of it seems to make sense until you go and see the beaches, the shops, the people. Until you feel the warmth in the air at the end of October, and if you’re lucky, see a sunset. Until you feel the excitement of – “hey, was that just someone famous?” and get sucked into the sport of celebrity spotting – until you actually do some of these things, you won’t understand it.

This trip – organized by my mom – fulfilling her dream of years to see that quintessential California band – the Eagles – in concert – in LA – just showed us the tip of the iceberg. Thankfully, some great planning by all involved let us experience some of the best that LA had to offer – to just scratch the surface of what LA is and to feel the attraction that draws so man people there.

Kurt Vonnegut once wrote, “Live in New York, but move away before it makes you hard. Live in Los Angeles, but move away before it makes you soft”. After this trip, I could live in LA – and while I understand why Vonnegut wrote that, I just don’t understand how he ever managed to leave.

So here was the itinerary:
Check into old-school 1920’s downtown hotel
Quick dinner at Wolfgang Puck Express
Dixie Chicks/Eagles Concert
Drinks at the Biltmore
Sleep off boozy evening
Head to Santa Monica, check-in at Georgian Hotel (Ocean-facing 1930’s classic hotel)
Lunch at Father’s Office (best burger in LA)
Shop on 3rd avenue
Dinner at Spago…meet the big man himself…spot celebrity parents
Sleep off food-filled evening
Breakfast on the veranda
Shop
Lunch at Wolfgang Puck Express
Fly home
