T: D somehow found this place – reputed to have the best burger In LA. Unfortunately, our (lousy) time budgeting on the trip up from San Diego in June didn’t let us hit this place up for a burger on the drive up the coast so we weren’t going to miss it this time.

First off, let me set your expectations. The best hamburger that I’ve ever had in my life was in Italy at Harry’s Bar in Florence. That burger – believe it or not – I would describe as ‘Creamy’. No, not an adjective that anyone wants to hear about a hamburger. And the burger contained no cream of any kind. But it really was probably the best adjective I can use to describe it, and it was truly, absolutely the best burger in my life and I’d say that it was without comparison in the realm of burgers. It is my hamburger yardstick, and I am a man who has had more than a few burgers in his life.

The burger at Father’s Office was probably #2 on my list of “Best Burgers of my Life”. If the Burger on Friday night at WPE kind of punched you in the mouth with its charbroiled taste, this burger just slid over your tongue, leaving delicate flavors of blue cheese, charred meat, carmelized onions, arugula, and wheaty bread in its wake.

Yes indeed delicious. Not your average burger in that instead of the cook trying to create a burger in some kind of “what do people think a burger should taste like”, he or she instead thought it out differently from the start. They looked at the ingredients that normally go into a burger and thought – now how can I use these ingredients together to make something that is delicious?

The end-result of all my yammering and rhapsodizing about this burger was a very full and very happy belly.

The restaurant itself is fairly small – maybe seating for 30 – and it seems like it’s always busy – it’s “find your own seat” kind of seating – and I think you need an ID to get into the place (hope you’re at least 21 there, McLovin) as it’s specialty is beer as much as it’s burgers. It had an awesome selection of beer to go with the burgers, but unfortunately I was still trying to advil- and walk-off my headache from the night before so I had an ice-cold Coke instead. Staff are nice, and perhaps just as importantly, damn efficient. We had our burgers within 10 minutes of ordering and overall, were a couple of extremely happy campers.

Definitely a place to hit up if you’re ever in Santa Monica, and probably worth making the trip over even if you’re just in LA.

Oh – one more note. Avoid the Yam fries.

Like all yam fries, they disappoint.

Yams just don’t have the same starches (or in
the same proportions) as russet potatoes do –
so while they look good, they never have that
crisp that fries really need to make you happy.

Just say ‘no’ to the yam fries, kids.
