The Pear Tree Vancouver, BC

November 2nd, 2007 · No Comments

Four ladies went for a birthday celebration to the Pear Tree. We went there on the advice of the chef at Diva at the Met who apparently said that this was a place that he and other chef like to dine. It is a high-end type of restaurant in a not-so-high-end neighbourhood in Burnaby on East Hastings. In fact, on the dark and rainy night we went there, we had trouble finding it. Once inside, it is a tastefully appointed modern yet cozy dining room. The service was excellent. The wine list is very reasonably priced. They serve what I have come to expect from many restaurants on the West Coast – fresh fare, locally sourced with a seasonal menu. I started with the lobster cappucino – foamed lobster with actual chunks of lobster tail at the bottom and dashi custard- delicious and inventive. The orange-smoked scallops with double smoked bacon risotto and the ceasar salad were also good but nothing special. The red-wine braised lamb shank with seared scallops and pear risotto was appropriately tender but I found the pear risotto just average. The sable fish was also perfectly cooked but the pork belly was the scene-stealer. The desserts were all excellent – creme brulee, chocolate ganache with caramel ice cream and lemon tart (I think). It was quite interesting that the kitchen was giving a complimentary dish of snow pea shoots to all tables – quite bland – definitely a dish that is done much better at the Legendary Noodle House. Overall, a pleasant dining experience with well-made tasty food at a reasonable price, particularly for the quality of the food. Would we go back again – maybe – it just seemed to lack that little something to make it special or exciting. In particular, since it is slightly off-the-beaten track, there are so many other places to try in Vancouver… Approximately $300 for 4 with a bottle of wine.
