Tojo’s Vancouver, BC

So we finally visited Tojo’s after hearing so much about it. Perhaps we were expecting too much – particularly after hearing that some call it the best japanese restaurant in Canada. In terms of surroundings, the new restaurant is a high-ceilinged room with a beautiful large bar surrounding the sushi preparation area. Tables and more intimate booths are located around the room. The lighting – particularly in the booth area – was on the dark side. Like many others in the restaurant, as evidenced by the repeated and resounding happy birhday songs sung by the staff at various tables, we also visited the restaurant for a special occasion.

The staff is attentive, friendly and japanese. As recommended by the staff, we tried the omakase (chef’s selection) – which in this case consisted of 5 dishes of the chef’s choice. The price of omakase ranges from $60, 80 to $120 – the price being based on the type of dishes served rather than the quantity of food. The birthday boy of the party had the $120 omakase, and, I would say it was not worth the difference in price. The hot dishes were perfectly cooked and seasoned but nothing exceptional. The sushi course was definitely the best. The sake list was interesting and we ordered the house recommended cold sake which was beautifully served in a tall bamboo container with bamboo cups.

Overall, a pretty good japanese meal but, for the high-price tag, not worth it. Maybe it is because japanese food is so reasonably priced in Vancouver, at the price-level of Tojo’s, we expected a more “blow-your-mind” experience. In all fairness, maybe it was an off night , or, as I have heard about other high-end japanese restaurants, Tojo’s saves the best for his best customers. I definitely preferred both Hiro Sushi and Sushi Kaji in Toronto over Tojo’s.

Will we go back? Maybe to sit at the sushi bar to watch the chefs’ art while snacking on some sushi and sipping sake.
