A nice contrast to the molecular gastronomy restaurants we had visited on our Chicago trip, Trotter’s was purely and simply excellent. It was nice to get back to good food done well with no fancy gastronomy tricks. It was also nice to have a less than 20 course tasting menu – which allowed us to appreciate (and remember) each dish as well as finish a meal in less than 2.5 hours. I think we were also having a bit of molecular gastronomy overload, and it was nice to get back to the food itself. The most cutting-edge innovation that was used was a foam…

Although the surroundings are not the modern sleek look ubiquitous in most restaurants of today, they are quiet and comfortable. As to be expected at a restaurant at this level, the service was excellent – friendly yet unobstrusive. Although Charlie Trotter’s was definitely missing the buzz of the newer more cutting-edge restaurants, in fact there were some empty tables, it felt comfortable and not stuffy.

There is an extensive wine-list and, although we had previously decided that we were not going to do a wine-pairing, which seriously adds to the cost, calories and memory blur of the meal, we couldn’t resist sharing the premium wine-pairing. (T can write about this).

At the end of the meal, be sure to ask for the kitchen tour…
