Zipang Sushi

So we ventured out on a rainy Friday night to try the sushi restaurant recommended by a local Japanese Vancouverite. Unlike many popular sushi restaurants these days, Zipang actually accepts reservations. Perhaps it is because it is a little off the main drag of Main street but – who cares? – all we care is that we didn’t have to wait.

The service was both friendly and attentive. The tiny restaurant has a few booths and tables with a simple decor with japanese prints on the wall and basic furniture. Aside for the need to turn the thermostat dial down, we were quite comfortable. Despite reading reviews regarding slow service, our service was fine with tea cups being refilled and all dishes arriving in a timely fashion although there was a bit of a lag between the last two dishes. We tried the sockey salmon sashimi, zipang roll, ebi chili roll, paradise roll, tokoyaki, seafood okonomi, tempura, bbq black cod and that was more than enough food for the four of us. Sadly, we didn’t have room to try the black sesame ice cream which had been recommended on other web reviews. A lot of food for a surprising $60 – a pretty good deal – although, it did highlight to our group the savings on dining when you do not order booze (note – Zipang did not seem to serve liquor as far as we saw). Tokoyaki (octopus balls) are a specialty of the restaurant and did not disappoint – served on a plate with the name of the dish written in japanese mayo, which made the dish even better in the eyes of a few of my companions. The seafood okonomi was also a delicious dish and seemed to be more of a cross between an omelette and pizza, leaning more to the omelette side in my opinion. The sushi/sashimi was strong but the highlights of the dinner were definitely the okonomy and tokoyaki.

Approx $60 + tip for dinner for 4
