Recently named by En Route as one of the top new restaurants of 2007, Kingyo is yet another addition to the army of izakayas around the city. Prettier surroundings than the other izakayas we have visited which were a little more basic, and a little quieter, although they still shout out a greeting as you enter the door. Bonus – they take reservations, which are highly recommended given that they were turning people away at the door as we arrived. Best – chicken karaage with three types of salt (the best fried chicken we have had), yellow tail sashimi, ebi mayo, nagoya rice roll. Downside – only 1 type of japanese beer (kirin), slightly pricier than other izakayas (although for the quality of food still a pretty good deal), reservations needed. Apparently you also have to try the shrimp spring rolls which are not on the menu but delicious served head to tail and the sashimi salad. Overall – nice surroundings, good food, slightly pricier than other izakayas.
