First off, this place isn’t all that great. I’m a little down on it, mainly because of the $7 beer.

Let me explain.

I like all kinds of restaurants – cheap, expensive, clean, dirty, whatever. I like them when they try to serve good food, good drinks, or just to try to create some kind of experience – whether it be one of ‘home’ or something more exotic. I don’t particularly mind mediocre food if it’s cheap; I don’t mind expensive food if it’s really good. But a mix of great and bad food and really expensive drinks and mediocre service? Sorry folks.

Sanafir’s food can be both below and above average – in fact, the pork, squid, and arctic char dishes that we had were great. The lamb we had was lousy.

But this place – which obviously cost a huge amount of money to build and decorate – and it is beautiful – falls down on charging too much for food that you could get at the Cactus Club, not having particularly knowledgeable waitstaff, and charging an arm and a leg for drinks. As well, I thought that they pushed the dessert menu a bit too hard on us at the end of the meal.

This blog is about great food or great dining experiences, and I’m sorry this place has neither. It’s beautiful inside, but so are museums and most of them are free on Tuesday nights. And I get to learn something. Vancouver has enough great restaurants that places like this will have a hard time staying open unless things get better, fast.
