I wasn’t expecting much here. Ghirardelli is known for great chocolate, but in the world of Lindt, or even in the more rarefied air of Pierre Herme, Patrick Roger, and Michel Cluziel, Ghirardelli is in the same category as Hershey’s.

But – consider me very surprised. This was the best, most all-American ice-cream sundae that I ever had. The hot fudge was actually – like the rug that ‘really tied the room together’ – the thing that made this sundae so special. Yes, it was hot – and thick, with a deep flavour neither too dark or too milky. The ice cream was great and creamy, the whipped cream real.

What more is there to say? It might be the best sundae that you can get in the US today. It’s the traditional, real-deal, done right. Not to be missed when strolling down to Fisherman’s Wharf.
