We owed it to this place to come back together. I had been back once since our last trip – and through the Asahi-induced haze of that evening, I remember the next morning thinking that I liked this place and its racous, noisy, busy atmosphere and its inexpensive savoury dishes even more than I did on our first trip.

The bottom line from this trip: these chefs know their Umami — we had an absolutely *awesome* dinner here last night.

Coming from the Liberty/VRC event, we had had a tipple or two of Champagne and had worked up an appetite for something savoury. One look at the menu and daily specials and we knew what to order: Ebi Mayo – the always-delicious breaded, fried shrimp served with Japanese mayonnaise; Deep-fried shrimp in bean-curd (like phyllo) – recommended by our waitress; the Yaki Udon – delicious, fast-fried thin strips of beef served with perfect udon – probably one of their most popular dishes; the takoyaki – deep-fried octopus balls, always a favourite; and finally, the Spanish Mackerel tartare with sesame seeds, miso, and green onions.

If the pictures above don’t say it, I will: this food is delicious. I think that while the food at Gyoza King is just as good, the atmosphere at Guu with Garlic rocks. It’s noisy, everyone in the place is drinking beer; the servers are constantly yelling out welcomes, tip celebrations, and orders to the kitchen in Japanese – and while that sounds like it would get annoying, the effect is instead one where it fuels the fun atmosphere. While the food at Kingyo is OK, the atmosphere is ornate and a bit fussy; and while Gyoza King’s food is great, it’s a small space and a bit more quiet and refined. Guu with Garlic is bright, racous, always busy, and everyone is having a good time. The dishes are a ridiculous bargain considering how good they are, I can’t quite put my finger on exactly why, but this is probably one of my favorite places in town. Perhaps its just because every time I come here, other people look like they’re happy, and with the great food and this great atmosphere, I’m happy too.

Dinner of 5 dishes, water to drink: $32.50 including tip
