Gale's Snack Bar

Gale's Snack Bar

This is by far the cheapest restaurant that I’ve been to in North America. Hell, it makes In-N-Out look expensive. One meal at Charlie Trotter’s is 100 meals at Gale’s.

A grilled cheese sandwich: $0.95 – or go whole hog for a chicken salad sandwich at $1.50. How about a milkshake? $1.25 and some coffee to wash it all down? $0.60.

I’m crazy about this place. The lady who works here has got to have the nicest manner of anyone in the service industry, anywhere. She needs to go traveling thoughout the world, teaching people in hospitals, gyms, restaurants, and shops how to be sincere and pleasant.

The food? It’s just fine. For 95 cents for a grilled cheese sandwich – were you expecting it to be filled with epoisses? No, you weren’t, and that’s crazy talk anyway. This place is awesome – it’s cheap, fast, pleasant, and clean. Sure, it could use some new linoleum and some new paint, but it’s clean. For $1.25 milkshakes, were you expecting a Tihany interior?

This restaurant in many ways summarizes what I love about the restaurant scene in Toronto. It’s the variety. I can go to Susur and pay $500 for a great dinner – or I can come to Gale’s and pay $5 for a great lunch (for two).

Come to Gale’s. Admire the care with which your order is taken and food delivered. Be thankful that places like this can somehow exist, and the next time you’re about to pay $12.50 for a high-end milkshake – think back to Gale’s and ask yourself – “is it ten times better?”
