Thai Son

September 8th, 2008 · No Comments

Popular Main Street area vietnamese eatery. Like most local pho joints – the decor is minimal with the requisite television on in the corner (although on mute – which is nice). Offering above average standard vietnamese fare – nothing spectacular but everything we have tried has been tasty, hot and fresh. We have tried various […]

The Foundation

September 7th, 2008 · No Comments

Popular vegetarian spot filled with local Main Street hipsters – tattoos and various body piercings are de rigueur. Eclectic decor with old school furniture and interesting quotes on the wall. Average but tasty vegetarian food with large portions with reasonably priced food and drinks. A draft beer or glass of wine averages about $5. Although […]

Speaking of MSG

September 7th, 2008 · No Comments

Japanese food made us think of kewpie mayonnaise and I was surprised to hear (well maybe not really) – that it contained MSG and that MSG may be a key player in “umami” – the fifth taste…. Interesting New York Times article on MSG.

Toshi Sushi

September 7th, 2008 · No Comments

So we braved the line-ups and went back to Toshi’s. There is a no reservation policy so write your name on the list and be prepared to wait (and wait) unless of course you get there before 5pm (when it opens) or after 8:30pm. The restaurant only seats approximately 30 people. ALL guests must be […]

Cioppino's

September 6th, 2008 · No Comments

Great service. Quiet intimate setting in the back wine room filled with their huge stock of wine. Gratious and accommodating service. They can do a tasting menu for you depending on what you would like to spend. We ate for 3 hours straight pretty much until we were stuffed full then the chef Christian finally et […]

Chambar

September 6th, 2008 · No Comments

Happening funky place in a not so happening funky area with the constant stream of customers and full house until late a testimony to the popularity of the food and drink. Great cocktails and selection of beer. The food is Belgian fare with an ?African twist. Our favorites are the mussels congolaise, the lamb tagine […]

Per Se

September 6th, 2008 · 1 Comment

We did it all in one year – the trifecta of Keller – Bouchon, The French Laundry and Per Se. Per Se apparently originally got its name when discussing the concept, Thomas Keller maintained that he did not want to do another French Laundry per se, and the “Per Se” just stuck. Although not the […]

Otto Enoteca

September 6th, 2008 · No Comments

The perfect place for us to unwind and enjoy good simple food after the extravagance of Per Se.  One of Mario Batalli’s battalion of restaurants, this place hit the spot.  It is obviously a local favorite – still going strong after 11pm when we were seated.  Despite being busy and with no reservation, we only […]

Cactus Club at Bentall 5

September 6th, 2008 · No Comments

Bentall 5 is a jazzed up Cactus Club, which is now obviously going for a more loungy “hip” (for lack of a better word) look and audience. There are still line-ups to get in although to be fair, they have a pager system which you can take to the bar and enjoy drinks as well […]

Bistrot Bistro

September 6th, 2008 · No Comments

Popular local Kistilano spot. Dropped in here on a whim when we couldn’t get a table at Fuel (even at 9pm at night there was a 45 minute wait). Solid food – nothing special on the calibre of average good food. Selling French bistro fare in a nice casual setting. Started off the meal with […]
