Rebar – Victoria

We had high expectations of this place, particularly given its popular eponymous cookbook. Rebar is a Victoria institution with many people raving about its tasty vegetarian food. Robert Belcham, the chef/owner of Fuel in Vancouver also did some training here.  Thus, our hopes were high and sadly we were disappointed, particularly given the wait. Even at 2pm, there was a line-up for tables.  There is no waitlist, which is rather inconvenient given that people have to crowd into the small entrance to hold their places in line and wait for open tables.  Overall, the food looked delicious but the overall taste was average. In particular, the enchilada was not only expensive (almost $15) but also burnt at the edges and re-heated (the middle was at best lukewarm).  The soba salad was tasty but nothing special.  I had heard good things about the rebar chocolate cake and while it looked tantalizing, the richness just wasn’t there. The beer wasn’t cold enough and we were not in the mood for one of the juices from the extensive list, which even included a juice which could tone your liver (imagine that). The décor is quirky kitschy and colorful with a mosaic Elvis greeting you at the front door. The service was the best thing – prompt and attentive. Maybe we ordered the wrong things. Maybe we expected too much. Overall, it was just an average vegetarian restaurant with reasonably tasty food but expensive for the quality.

Not worth the line-up and quite expensive for a veggie restaurant.
