The guys at Fuel – have done it again – this time in a more low-key budget-conscious fashion. This is one of our current favourite places to eat in Vancouver. We have gone back several times and it has been consistently good. Campognolo – apparently means something along the lines of countryman/country bumpkin, as a playful reference to the 3 Alberta boys who set up the restaurant. We have always been a fan of Fuel and this new endeavour by Robert Belcham et al does not disappoint. In an unusal spot near the main street sky station, you wouldn’t expect this simple yet comfortable casual italian eatery.

Campagnolo serves casual and reasonably-priced rustic italian food in a 65-seat open-dining room with a wine bar in back (with a TV back there if you want to catch the hockey game at the same time). Located close to the Main Street sky train station – it is in and “underdeveloped” area but that doesn’t seem to stop the foodies in the know from parking their luxury vehicles out in front. In fact, if you are having trouble finding the restaurant – look for a row of nicer-looking parked cars and the Ivanhoe Pub/hotel and you should find the restaurant.

The service is friendly. The food reasonably priced – all the mains are under $20 and sides around $5. Our favourites include: crispy ceci (fried seasoned chickpeas), octopus salad, pate di campagnae, any of the salumi (cured meats), polenta (super creamy), kale/soffritto/lardo, polderside chicken, and any of the pizzas (in particular, the funghi with pancetta was amazing).

The wine list is also well-priced and well-stocked with a bottles to suit any price range and several wines by the glass.

Great for a casual night out or even a quick late night snack. They even do group functions where they put together a menu covering an extensive portion of their menu and for $40/person – a good deal of food.
