It happened to be somebody’s b-day party and what better way to celebrate than with some old friends over for a pizza party. We had heard good things about The Firewood Cafe – in the Main Street area, it seems to be place to go for respectable-tasting pizza.

We ordered two pizzas – Pizza #12 – the Italian, with salami, capicollo, spinach, roma tomatoes & fresh garlic; and Pizza #3 – the Classic Veggie, with mushrooms, onions, green peppers, kalamata olives, artichokes & roma tomatoes.

We ordered them no problem, D then went to pick them up, and within what seemed like no time at all, we were digging into these tasty pies.

Is this pizza you’d get in Naples? No. Is this even Pizza that you’d get in New York or Chicago? No. But it’s pretty darn good, this being Vancouver and all. Some people are toppings people, other people are crust people. I think that my tastes can go to either the toppings or the crust if one is particularly great. These pizzas were pretty squarely upper-middle-of-the-road for both. The mix of meats on the Italian pizza was actually really nice, and the tomatoes and spinach provided some variety so it wasn’t just mouthfuls of meat and sauce. The classic veggie I would order again as the mix of olives, eggplant, and artichoke made it definitely me much more than your typical tomatoes/green peppers/mushrooms watery mess. These savoury vegetables made a really nice combo that even a non-vegetarian could like.

So – given my fairly low expectations of pizza given the location – I think I’d give the Firewood Cafe’s pies a ‘thumbs-up’. The crust is thin enough, the toppings are tasty enough. It’s a well-balanced pizza that nobody could take offense to, and with some of the more interesting combinations of toppings, there’s something for everyone.
