Out for drinks with M – he hasn’t been down to Gastown much, and I was taken to the Revel Room a few months back by a native Vancouverite, and was impressed with their ability to whip up a proper Old Fashioned and by the fresh-baked chocolate chip cookies they were serving to bar patrons at 2am. This is one of Vancouver’s few places to get late-night food, and reasonably good food, at that.
We headed down here after a couple of drinks, for a few more and maybe a bite to eat. The Revel Room is in a classic old building in Gastown, and with exposed brick walls it has a nice feel to it – it’s pretty sedate, not too loud, high ceilings, two floors, lots of room. The kind of place you could be loud if you wanted to, or just sink into a corner and drink with a book.
We got there about 11pm and found out that we were on the late-night menu, so with M being veg, we just ordered the ‘JoJos’ – basically large fried potato wedges that came with some curried mayonnaise and basically ketchup. These were ok – nothing special. A bit too starchy and big – smaller cuts would have cooked better. The curried mayo was good for dipping (not like it wouldn’t be), but overall I’d stick to the other dishes.
While they had a few fancy cocktails on the menu, I was dubious about the ability of the bartender to execute something really fancy (my own fear, not based on previous experience), so we stuck to having a dark and stormy (ginger beer & Gosling’s dark rum) which were actually…delicious. So, at the very least they serve a mean highball here.
I’d come back here any time late night for food or drinks without hesitation. At 1am, sometimes you just need to fill the stomach to keep everything else down. But as a separate dining experience, I probably wouldn’t make a separate trip. That being said, there can be a big difference between the late-night and full menus, so perhaps I shouldn’t judge until I’ve tried.
If it’s earlier in the evening, and you’re in gastown, I think you’d be better off heading to The Greedy Pig for awesome cocktails and great food, but late night, so far the Revel Room is the best I’ve found in the neighborhood.
