Sunday night (long weekend) dinner with M&M at their place in Toronto. I used to work with M in downtown toronto, and a hop, skip and jump away from the office was Spadina Gardens – a Chinese restaurant on Dundas Street West, in one of Toronto’s many old Chinatowns. Friends were coming over, so we decided to get some takeout. M is veg, so he’s a bit limited in terms of options, but thankfully pretty much every Chinese restaurant has enough veg options to keep life from getting monotonous.

The food here is great Chinese food – and much of it is pretty hot too, for those who like fiery goodness. Unfortunately, I don’t have a menu, but the pictures above tell the story.

We started with the hot & sour soup – one of the best I’ve ever had in any Chinese restaurant. Many people at work could never remember the name of this place, but you’d just say “the one with the hot & sour soup” and they’d know it, and join you for lunch. The soup has an amazingly broth, slightly thickened with starch (but not gummy), onion, mushroom, and an amazing sourness to it that is balanced perfectly – not too salty or sweet with a ‘just right’ kind of heat. This soup makes any meal here worth it alone.

We had three other dishes – spicy eggplant, tofu and veggies, and seafood noodles. The heat of the spicy eggplant deserves to be called ‘molten’ – this was one of the hottest dishes that I have ever ordered in any restaurant. My mouth is watering as I’m writing this – it was amazingly good – I’ll be ordering this every time I come back. The noodles were great – the shrimp full of flavour and the noodles having that wonderful, thick mouth-feel that make them comfort food for anyone in need of nourishment. The fried tofu was great – not soggy, not greasy – a bit of heat but a dish that anyone could love.

And the price? I think the meal was about $30. It fed four of us, with leftovers to spare – I’m not sure how you can beat this in terms of quality or value. Time to add (yet) another place to the list of the many awesome Chinese restaurants in Toronto.

And, as an eat-in place, it is great. They’ve renovated in the last couple of years, and it’s even nicer inside – a great place to eat if you’re in the city hall area for lunch, or an evening dinner anytime.
