Dufflet Rosenberg – the “Queen of Cakes” is a Toronto institution who first opened her eponymous cafe over 30 years ago when she opened her first store on Queen West. There are now 3 Dufflet cafes scattered around town and we stopped by the location in the Beaches. The Beaches actually has a small serene sitting area (seats approx 24) in back where you can enjoy a light meal/dessert and drink (liquor license to boot) and extended evening hours. But really most people come here to pick up dessert. There are a plethora of cakes and tarts to choose from in all shapes and sizes. My favourite cake is the chocolate banana cake – sounds plain and boring – but I tried it after I asked one of the people behind the counter what were some of the popular cakes – and I was hooked. Moist banana cake layered between chocolate ganache – how can you go wrong?

Dufflet also sells many pre-packaged products. My friend said the crackle was delicious so we tried it. It comes in many flavours but I bought a box of the milk chocolate hazelnut crackle which is like a thin milk chocolate layer of multitudes of tiny almost caramelized hazelnut pieces – this would be great with ice cream. Sadly, there was just no room for cake for me this day but next time….
