We’d all love for our cities to have a Pierre Hermé or a Thomas Haas. Well, if you look hard enough, pretty much every city has someone (probably from Europe) who has opened a bakery, and is putting their passion into pastry. Didier Julien and his family and team at Julien’s are doing just that – and the result is well worth a trip.

Located in Halifax’s trendy Hydrostone area, Julien’s Patisserie is located on an awesome (but tiny) strip of shops where you can get some flowers, a meal, a gift, an antique, or a delicious pastry and some fresh-baked bread.

J and I stopped in after our meal at Smitty’s to continue the chat over an Americano and an almond croissant.

The croissant wasn’t air-light – instead, it was sticky with sugar, dense and heavy – but damn was it tasty. This was a single-baked almond-chocolate croissant that hit the spot, had some great chocolate in it, wasn’t too strong with the almond flavour, and had an unctuous sweetness to it that made it perfect for sharing for two.

The Americano was decent enough, the sunbeam coming in the huge front windows was perfect, and the relaxed air of the café/bakery and friendly service made it a great place to go on a perfect Sunday morning to catch up with an old friend. They make a lot more than just pastries at Julien’s – try out the bread or any of the other baked goods, and you won’t be disappointed. They have another location in Chester, NS – a great place to drop in for those who are on a bit of a tour of the South Shore.

And just make sure you get there early – we didn’t make it in time to have the pain au chocolat. I guess that means I’ll just have to come back.
