I have no idea how this place has brought the cream puff back (or where it ever went), but if you’re in need of something sweet, fairly light, and decadent enough that you’ll just have one, come to Beard Papa’s anytime. In the West End, it’s in the super-busy strip on Denman near Davie Street, almost next door to the Marble Slab Ice Cream store, and these two places are usually packed with young dessert-goers, out to see the sun set at English Bay and to have a little something sweet after dinner.

Their cream puffs (they have various flavours, but I only ever get the vanilla for some reason) are very light – the pastry part is just a wisp of pastry, more to hold the cream and keep your fingers clean while you get the cream into your mouth. The cream is thick, tasty stuff, sweet but not unctuous, full of vanilla flavour without any notes of fake flavours to it, and the whole thing is big enough to be shared by two people. Sure, have more – try the mango, the chocolate, the green tea – but you’ll soon see that there’s only one flavour that works every time – the vanilla.

Occasionally, when I go to bite into these, I get a note of ‘old frying oil’ but that goes away as soon as the nose picks up the vanilla – i’m not sure why that is – whether it’s actually old oil or whether it’s just from the dough. Either way, it’s the only negative thing about these cream puffs.

Go, try them, see why they’re so popular, and have a beautiful evening with your cream puff(s) watching the sun set on the beach.
