This local mexican joint has won awards for its traditional mexican food. Recommended by a friend, who got the referral from some Mexicans who only eat at this place to get their food fix. It’s pretty cheap too.

The service is fast and friendly. As soon as you walk in you are seated at a table and presented with a paper plate of a few tortilla chips. The waitress directs you to the veritable buffet of salsa sauces just by the cash register. I loved this part since I could try as many of the salsas that I wanted – in the end, I preferred the mexican salsa. The house specialty is the tacos – at $2 a piece, or $2.50 with cheese – these are filling and delicious. Some people may find the menu a little bit confusing since it says two soft flour tortillas per order so although you may be thinking that you are getting two tacos, it is really two overlapping tortillas topped with a generous amount of filling. At $2 a pop, try all the fillings and figure which one you like. Aside from the chicken, which I found rather bland, most of the fillings were delicious with a reasonable serving of meat. You can then head to the salsa table and pile on as much salsa, onions, jalapenos that you want. On sunday, they over a mexican stew which was a large and hearty bowl of stew filled with chicken and white beans – tasty but could have used more spice for my taste.

I am not a huge fan of mexican food because usually, although cheap, it is not done very well in most local joints. Dona Cata is different – it’s the real deal and inexpensive to boot. Next time, I will try the tres leches cake – maybe it will bring back memories of Sayulita, Mexico when the local cake lady brought out her nightly cake creations to tempt you as you strolled by….
