Bakeries occupy this special place in my heart – the good ones are run by people who love food, who put that love into what they do, and produce an exceptional product that just makes you happy. Flour is this kind of a place.

Sunday morning – pouring rain and blowing wind, I was going to get to the Institute of Contemporary Art if it was the last thing I did this trip – but I knew that by the time I got there, I’d be seriously in need of coffee and nourishment. The ICA website actually has a long list of neighborhood restaurants, and I noticed that “Flour Bakery” was listed – I looked it up online and found basically about a million reviews raving about how amazing this place was. That sealed it for me and off I went.

I got there and yet again saw a bunch of people outside – even in the rain (on their covered patio) – thankfully this wasn’t a lineup – just people leaving, but it was a good sign that given this weather, this place was still this busy. Coming inside – one thing I noticed was – kids! Flour is right around the corner from the Boston Children’s Museum, and this place looks super kid-friendly – it even has a kid’s menu, and there are tons of baked sweet things for your little one.

I didn’t do much research on what to order, but I did find one person recommended the sticky buns, so I bought one (to take home to D), and ordered a cappuccino and a roasted chicken sandwich. There was a *huge* selection of baked goods – cakes, cookies, breads, rolls – just too much variety for me to do any justice in a quick review – and all of it looked *great*. The cappuccino was perfect – hand-made, with foam art, and impressive considering most bakeries often focus on the baked goods and leave the coffee as a second thought. The sandwich was actually delicious. Perfectly cooked (it has been grilled), made on fresh italian bread with peppers, grilled sweet onions, chicken, and some green leafy stuff (I don’t know whether it was arugula or something else) – this was just a fabulous sandwich. I would come here any time for one of these.

The staff were really friendly, and I liked Flour’s industrial-but-warm inside with the tall ceilings and a combination of small tables and shared long tables. Breakfast was about $15 including the takeaway sticky bun, and this was the perfect place to stop on the way to the ICA. Not to be missed when you’re in the Fort Point neighborhood.
