Xurreria – Barrio Gotic, Banys Nous – Barcelona

Xurreria - Barcelona

So – after reading a blog about churros – we hunted down the Xurreria (the Catalan spelling of churreria) on Banys Nous in the Bario Gotic (I don’t know the exact address but it is a few doors down from a milk bar called La Granja (c/ Banys Nous 4, Gotico)). Twice we went by and it was closed and no opening hours were posted. Finally, on the third try – it was open….but sadly, they had run out of churros with only chocolate-covered churros left at about 1pm. Since we had no other option – we tried the chocolate-covered churros which were about 1.50 E for 5 sticks (you pay by weight). Good but not spectacular. We were told to come back at around 5-5:30pm when they make more. So, of course we did. We were in luck as we were able to watch the guy prepare the churros dough, squeeze them out into the hot oil then gather them up to be served hot in a cone (with sugar sprinkled on top) right into our waiting mouths. I think it was about 1 Euro for 5 sticks.

Note the address above is actually of a milk bar (granja) that is close by – go there and look for this place. If it is closed (like the many times we passed by) then look for the small sign “xurreria” above the fully covered entrance which is quite unassuming – make a mental note – and return when it hopefully opens around 4:30-5:00pm.

Banys Nous, Barrio Gotic, Barcelona
Verdict: good place to get fresh churros (probably not as worth it if they have been sitting there for a while so go early), I have had better churros and prefer them with cinnamon sugar (like in Mexico) versus granulated sugar
