Considered one of the world’s most luxurious hotels, Villa d’Este in Cernobbio certainly deserves this reputation. We didn’t venture too far into the very large grounds, where hotel rooms begin somewhere upwards of €500/night, but we sat near the pool, and sipped a drink, and looked out over Lago di Como, and enjoyed the view.

Service was a tad frosty, if efficient, and yes, the view is amazing. The cuba libre that I ordered came with a generous pour of good white rum, and D’s San Pellegrino tasted like San Pellegrino. But for €22, I wouldn’t expect them to skimp on the rum.

Look – this place is supposed to be one of the nicest hotels in the world. I had a political science teacher in high school who mentioned once that when he thought of paradise, he thought of Villa d’Este. So, I had to go and find out what this great teacher’s idea of paradise looked like, and being able to have a cube libre in paradise is my idea of real paradise – and it all worked out.

I don’t know if my idea of paradise is somewhat stiff serving staff and feeling out of place because I can’t afford a €700 room for the night, but certainly the settings are beautiful. The view of the lake on that beautiful summer night and sitting in that chair with a cool drink and nothing better to do all made for a great evening. I don’t know if I’d go back – I think my idea of paradise is actually somewhat different than dear old Mr. Abbott’s, but for €26, it was as pleasant a way to spend an evening as many of them that I’ve spent.
