Kingston Taphouse & Grille – Vancouver, BC

Kingston Taphouse & Grille
I was here a while ago but forgot to blog about it, so it will be short, but here goes. It was a rainy Friday night, and a bunch of old friends were getting together for a drink and to catch up. We headed to the Kingston as it was downtown and served beer, that magical elixir that can make the many years that we’ve all had where we haven’t spent enough time keeping in touch disappear and make the good times seem like yesterday.

And that’s the kind of evening it was. The Kingston is quite large inside, with both an upstairs and downstairs – it’s quite nice and clean as well. Lots of warm wood and comfortable seating. And yes, they do serve beer.

We had a few nibbles as well – edamame, fries, a salad, and a veggie pizza. The pizza was pretty good –
the salad was fresh, and most importantly, the fries were crisp and fresh and hadn’t been dying under a heat lamp for ages, something the kitchen staff at other restaurants don’t always seem to appreciate. The service was great and put up with us and kept us well lubricated all night. The mixed drinks weren’t bad in terms of prices (for downtown Vancouver) – singles were $5, doubles were $7.50, but large draughts were $6.25.

I don’t think I moved from the banquette for about 6 hours – it was that kind of night, and we had about a million laughs, and got caught up on the many adventures that we’ve all had between then and now. The Kingston was a perfect place – it was clean, well-lit, the music was good, the drinks flowed, and the food – while just regular western bar food – was tasty enough and was fresh when it arrived. This isn’t fine dining, and it doesn’t make itself out to be – at any place that calls itself firstly a ‘taphouse’ and secondly a ‘grille’ (why the -e?) – the only thing you have the right to expect is cold drinks, hopefully fresh food, and clean bathrooms. And this place delivered.

I’d go back with a bunch of friends because a) it was easy to get seating, b) we could be noisy and nobody cared, c) everything was decent enough, and d) being in the center of downtown, was easy to get to. ‘Nuff said.
