Listed in the Michelin Guide for Italy as a ‘Bib Gourmand’ restaurant, this place has made me re-think the trust I put in the ‘Bib Gourmand’ ranking.

Dinner was €42 – which wasn’t bad for Venice, being a reasonably expensive tourist town. But the food? I think the word ‘Meh’ best describes my reaction to it, which isn’t a word, but then – this isn’t great food. Sorry. Even I don’t follow my own logic some (most) days.

Service was pleasant, spoke English, French, Italian, (and I assume, German), and very efficient. The restaurant was clean, roomy, well-lit, and not overly noisy. There was no lineup to get in at 7:30pm here in August.

I ordered the “Adriatic mixed plate” of fish, and received a plate of breaded and fried squid, clams, shrimp, sardines, and some kind of slightly larger (than a sardine) white fish. All were exactly as you could get anywhere in the world – breaded, fried seafood, not particularly well cooked or particularly flavourful. I ordered a side of local vegetables – I received a plate of unseasonsed, cold, overcooked peas, carrots, mini-zucchini, fava beans, and spinach.

D ordered the squid in ink with polenta with a side of fresh salad. The salad was as advertised, and all her veggies were good. The polenta was a lump of near-flavourless rubbery polenta. The squid was actually quite tasty, but presentation left something to be desired – it was a mass of black, completely unidentifiable food, swimming in jet-black sauce. By far the best-tasting thing that we ordered (it tasted of butter and seafood), but an interesting experience to eat ‘mystery food’ due to the all-smothering black ink sauce – not a complaint – just interesting.

Back to my thoughts on Michelin’s ‘Bib Gourmand’ rating: some Bib restaurants serve great food, some serve cheap food, and some are in between. Alla Madonna serves cheap food, and serves it fast, in reasonably pleasant surroundings – and that’s about it.

FYI – if you *are* going to visit, Google Maps gives the wrong location for this restaurant. It is on Calle della Madonna, not Ramo della Madonna – find it in your Michelin Guide and use that map instead – or just ask the concierge – or just go somewhere else with better food.
