Gelateria San Stae – Venice, Italy

November 12th, 2009 · 1 Comment

Recommended by the Lonely Planet Italy guidebook, we found this place after dinner at Ristorante Alla Madonna. While the LP said it closed at 8pm, we found it open at about 9:30pm on this warm August night – lucky for us.

A small, unassuming place in this crazy city – we found it almost by luck – the neon ice cream cone in the window caught our eye and we found out that it was open, so in we went. We ordered a €2 cup of the after-dinner standby, limone, along with Acerola, which was an interesting surprise for us. The limone was very good, with tiny bits of real lemon in it – quite bitter, but very refreshing after our meal. The Acerola tasted very much like what I’d imagine passion fruit gelato to taste like. Both of these sorbettos were real sorbetto – they had a nice smooth texture, and weren’t grainy and weren’t milky/creamy either – just the perfect complement after a meal that needed some flavour.

Come here any time for good Gelato.

I know the Gelateria San Stae very well – I lived just around the corner for several months this summer – and it is definitely one of the best ice cream places in Venice. Everything is home made with quality raw materials, and it shows in the final product.

    Highly recommended.
