Not only does he produce the best pastries that I have had in North America – and better than many I have had in France, but he has replicated his business in North Vancouver and opened a Kitsilano branch.
He will be busy.
Saturday morning – about 11:30 (late start) – we pick up J and head to Thomas Haas in Kitilano. Situated next to Lumiere and a few doors down from Moderne Burger and DB Bistro Moderne, this promises to be a solid block of fabulous food places on West Broadway.
The new store is a bit bigger than the old one, but still retains some very interesting architectural details and every surface in the store has been designed – this place is ‘tight’ as an old friend might say. The tables are a bit on the small side – but really, who cares? You’re there for the food – and the food is still amazing.
When we arrive at 11:30, the pain au chocolat are sold out, so we order a pear tart – we’re told that there will be some more double-baked almost croissants coming out in 20 minutes, so we order one and wait. I get a latte, J gets his with soy milk (lactose + J = bad), and he also gets the Moroccan chicken sandwich and a bowl of the soup of the day, which I think was tomato (I forgot to ask). We are lucky, get a table, and sit and munch away.
Mr. Haas and J know eachother, so he sends over a complimentary plate of macarons – and I almost bite off J’s finger when he grabs the rosewater-flavoured one (my favourite) from the centre of the plate. Soon enough, the double-baked almond croissant comes out of the oven, someone calls my name, and I’m back in heaven.
Only this time, I don’t have to drive as far.
So – Mr. Haas has done it again. He has kept up the amazing quality of his food, the great service of his team members behind the counter and in the kitchen, and created another beautiful spot to sit and eat and enjoy truly one of the very good things in life.
Best wishes to him – may he continue with his success and not find what must be ridiculously hard work too overbearing. Go and enjoy something fresh from the store today – and get some delicious hot chocolate, sparkle cookies, dark chocolate – or anything else to go.
