Dai Tung Chinese Restaurant – Vancouver, BC

Dai Tung Chinese Restaurant - Vancouver, BC
Dinner on a Friday night to celebrate a special birthday – we went out to Dai Tung. Perhaps the subtleties of Chinese restaurants are somewhat lost on me, but they have a tendency to have similar food, a similar look inside, and similar service. I’m not saying by any stretch that they’re all the same – but they’re certainly more difficult to stratify than, say, going to the French Laundry vs your local sushi restaurant. I think that probably part of the problem is that I don’t speak Cantonese or Mandarin, and when I eat at these restaurants, I’m there with people who do, so I have no interaction with the waiters/waitresses and thus much is lost on me.

So I guess it’s just easier to do a quick blurb on what the place is like, and if I’d go there again.

The short answer: it’s clean, recently re-done, relatively quiet, the service is fast and efficient, and the food is good. It has fish tanks that are cleaner than most I’ve seen in Chinese restaurants, and it very conveniently has parking out front as it’s in kind of a plaza on the Kingsway.

The food was tasty – we had lotus soup, baked eel, fried sweet fibs, a steamed mixed seafood dish, some kind of white fish (also steamed), green beans with ground pork, and tofu with a sauce made of dried scallop. The green beans were delicious, and the eels (eels!) were perfect – wow, eel is delicious. I never, ever thought I’d say that. The ribs/fried pork I would skip next time, but everything else was good.

Like pretty much every Chinese restaurant, Dai Tung is super kid-friendly, and with free parking and good food – it makes a great place for a family dinner. Dinner for 8 adults and 2 toddlers was $136 including tax – so definitely the price is right. I’d go here again.
