Au Petit Cafe – Vancouver

Popular but small local Vietnamese restaurant on Main Street which also closes pretty early – 7pm – or very early if you compare it relative to other Asian restaurants. The owners must be making good money. If you come around lunch time be prepared to wait for one of the few tables, although thankfully service is fast. If you can’t wait, take-out is available. The vietnamese subs are great – a fresh lightly toasted french baguette filled with your choice of house meat ball, house ham, chicken, pork, veggie, etc. Keep in mind that the fresh jalapeno peppers that they put in the subs can be quite hot. In addition, some of the subs come with fish sauce and if you haven’t developed a palate for it you might want to ask them to hold it although I personally like it. So far, I like the chicken sub the best but the house sub is quite good too. The pho is tasty and you can choose either a beef based broth or lighter chicken based broth. One of my vietnamese friends claims it is the best pho in town but frankly I do not think I am enough of a connoisseur to make a judgment. The curry dish also seems to be quite popular although I have not gotten around to trying it yet. I If you do want to order a bunch of subs, they can sell out a popular times on weekends so you might want to consider ordering in advance.

The room is bare bones although the service is fast and efficient. People come here for the food. CASH only.
