Dark Horse Espresso (Spadina) – Toronto, Ontario

The cleaning up of the old factories on Spadina continues, and with it, has come a new coffee house. D and I were strolling down Spadina during our visit in January, reliving many happy memories shopping in Chinatown and Kensington Market, when we saw Dark Horse Espresso. My need for delicious coffee overtook my already-wired brain and in we went for a quick shot.

It’s a large, spacious area inside, and it looked like a great place to study, meet up with friends, or while away the afternoon.

The coffee? It was decent enough espresso – it didn’t set my world on fire, neither was it a watery mess. Just pretty much standard espresso. No 49th Parallels or Cafe Artigiano to be sure. The attitude from the barista was completely unwelcome though – it wasn’t particularly busy – it was just unpleasant customer service. It’s funny how something like that, 5 months later, still stands out in my mind about this place.

It’s nice to see places like this opening in Toronto – hopefully many more to come.

Verdict: nice place – come for the coffee and the space. Hope for better service next time.
