For ages now we’ve been going on about how great the macarons are at Pierre Hermé while we haven’t been giving the other challenger, Ladurée even a chance. This is like seeing Joe Frazier go at a heavy bag and saying that he’s the best boxer in the world. It’s like seeing a Picasso and saying he’s better than Matisse without even seeing Icarus. It’s like…well, you get the picture.

So it’s past dinner time, we’re hungry, we’re on the Champs Élysées – and I spot Ladurée – so in we go to sample the macarons and see if we can come to a conclusion. We try: Mimosa, Orange Flower Cassis & Violet, Cherry, Lemon, Vanilla, Caramel, and Rose.

Where Pierre Hermé’s macarons are elegant, melt-in-your-mouth, delicate pastries that seem ethereal and yet bursting with flavour, Ladurée’s macarons are more unctuous, sticky, flavour-bombs that give you something to chew on. Where Pierre Hermé mixes in flavours like wasabi, olive oil, and matcha – Ladurée paints with primary colors – lemon, cherry, blackcurrant.

The verdict: we liked the fruit flavours from Ladurée better – their simplicity bursts with flavour and brings a smile to your face. But Pierre Hermé’s macarons are lighter, more delicate, and he mixes flavours with a deft hand, knowing just how far to push to create the unexpected. Ladurée = Monet; Pierre Hermé = Van Gogh. Both are great – each in their own way.
