Saturday night, out with J & J – an urban couple with no kids so it’s time to go somewhere that is more ‘cool’ than ‘chucky cheese’. We haven’t knocked our heads together ahead of time to get a reservation, but it’s early and we figure that Chill Winston has a great location, a cool enough vibe, decent enough food, and will probably be able to seat us.

It looks like we’re in luck – no problems with the table. Chill Winston has been open for a few years, and has (solely in my opinion) probably the best patio in Vancouver. It is in an old brick-and-beam building in Vancouver’s historic Gastown district, and sits at the confluence of four streets, with its brick patio splayed out in front – it’s got a great view of some old buildings and crowds going by. On Sunny evenings, it gets great evening sun, and is the kind of place that a ‘quick drink after work’ can easily turn into a very late night.

J has a Martini, I have a bourbon and water (both are decent enough, but their bourbon selection is limited). I start with the charcuterie plate, which is good enough, if not terribly interesting. It wasn’t full of ‘house-cured lardo’ or anything – rather a bit more regular fare that wouldn’t cut the mustard in Aix or Avignon, but probably won’t scare anyone off with a more North American experience of charcuterie. For mains, J has the arctic char and I have the lamb. Both are decent enough – this food is easily a competitor for the likes of Coast, Glowbal, Nu – the ‘nice to look at’ places in Vancouver that have good enough food, but nothing that blows you out of the water.

Throughout the meal, our service is pleasant, efficient, and does a great job. The bar gets louder throughout our meal – but hey – this place is a bar and a restaurant, so it’s expected.

Really, I have no complaints about the food here. I like the look of the place; the servers are friendly; the patio is superb on a sunny afternoon. It’s not super-cheap, but considering the location, setting, and that the food is definitely decent – it’s worth it.
