The Ritz Paris is perhaps the world’s most famous hotel – and as every hotel has at least one bar where the inhabitants can go and drown their sorrows, the Ritz is no exception. And when you’re the most famous hotel in the world, this means that you have the most famous hotel bar in the world – and this would most definitely be the Bar Hemingway.

The Bar Hemingway is headed up by Colin Peter Field, widely acknowledged as one of the world’s top bartenders, and author of the best cocktail book that I have ever had the pleasure to read (and please believe me that I have read more than a few). So as we were in Paris, how could we pass up on the opportunity to have a truly fabulous cocktail in this cozy spot and wonder what it would have been like to see Papa or any of the other famous customers while away the hours here?

I found ‘The Cocktails of the Ritz Paris’ years ago in a bookstore in Toronto and it quickly became a source of enjoyment and many late nights for many friends as we pored through the pages, trying to make one drink after another, and trying to make them half as good as we imagined they were at the Bar Hemingway. Good friend (and fellow bon vivant) B was the recipient of many of these drinks – and so as we were on our way out to dinner with B and A, we figured that we should stop off for a drink before the meal.

We just dropped in at 6:30pm (as it opened) and were warmly greeted, given our choice of seats, and brought some delicious snacks, including ‘made-here’ potato chips. A had the serendipiti, I had a Lutteur III (named after the famous horse), D had the Robertino.

Needless to say, the drinks were wonderful, the service charming, the surroundings equally so, and for a moment, we certainly felt glamourous and had a few laughs. A word of caution though – these drinks are expensive – think €25-€30 each – I will let others argue about the ‘value’ of coming here – but for one drink, for that fleeting feeling of romance, for the fun of it all and for just being able to say you did it, come here and find out just how good a cocktail can be.

And don’t forget to get a copy of the book – it’s a must for any bon vivant’s bookshelf.
