Sunday night – out with M (in town for the weekend from Toronto) – he ran the half-marathon Sunday am, and he’s veg, so he needs some serious veg calories tonight. South Asian cuisine always has great veg food, so we’re off to Rangoli.
We’ve enjoyed the deliciousness that Vij’s is before – and Rangoli is located right next door – a place for either eat-in casual, less-perfect Indian food, or for take-out frozen boil-in-bag meals. We arrive, are seated immediately, and brought menus right away. Service is amazingly friendly and fast.
We start with Lentil, Paneer and Chickpea Samosas – these are a bit more doughy and not as savoury (chickpea + paneer aren’t exactly packed with flavour) than the samosas that I remember having at Vij’s, but overall, a nice way to start the meal. We follow this up with the Curried Spinach and Paneer, and the Grilled Eggplant with Chickpeas. Both were pretty nice – they could have used some more eggplant in the eggplant/chickpea dish, but the presentation was nice, and the food wasn’t overly heavy.
I guess my only complaint against Rangoli, after having their prepackaged dishes many times, and after eating there on this occasion, is that the food isn’t that good. Don’t get me wrong – it’s tasty. But after living in Toronto, and eating at such amazing places like Ghandi’s and the Lahore Tikka House, both of which are about half as expensive as Rangoli and easily twice as good, I find it hard to justify the prices for Rangoli’s food which is only ‘pretty good’.
As a restaurant though, everything else about Rangoli is great.
Bottom line: Better food next door at Vij’s, good food but hard to justify the price
